Today marked the first official day of FALL.

Daylight is shorter.

The air is crisper.

Leaves fall.

Pumpkin is in abundance.

BOOTS and SWEATERS can come out of hiding.

{Well, as soon it's not 90 degrees anymore}

I always envisioned myself as a "GIRL" Momma.

So it came to no surprise when we found out we were having a baby girl.

I saw frilly dresses, lace tights, and big obnoxious headbands.

I was ALSO certain I would even have a little towhead.

WRONG!

God flicked me down on this one guys.... {SIGH}

Landyn is my little tom boy.

Sure she wears dresses and plays dolls.

I even manage to sneak a cute clip in her hair from time to time.

But the reality is,

she is happiest when she is outside:

in the dirt, riding bikes, tinkering in the garage or doing something CRAZY with her Daddy.

And I am ok with that.

I am all about letting her true colors shine.

God's plan is so beautiful and unexpected.

Here's to hoping that #2 comes out JUST LIKE ME.

DIY Glitter Pumpkin Candle Holders

It's been awhile since we've crafted together...

and frankly,

I am having withdrawals.

So today,

I have a fall craft that is a must have to display around your home.

PSST...

I got my Pottery Barn catalog in the mail today and it's pumpkins GALORE!

DIY Glitter Pumpkin Candle Holders

Styrofoam pumpkin (on sale at Michaels)

sharp knife

mod podge

glitter

spoon

paint brush

tea light candle (mine are even pumpkin spice, my favorite)

To begin, cut a circle around the top of your pumpkin.

I used my tea light candle to gauge how big to make my circle.

Scoop out Styrofoam with a spoon.

Using your paint brush, layer your entire pumpkin with mod podge.

Sprinkle with glitter.

Let your pumpkin dry completely overnight.

Place a tea light in your cut out circle.

Display.

I loved the way they looked on my silver candle sticks.

Light and Enjoy

I recently saw a segment on ANGER in America.

Unless you've been living under a rock,

your aware that this negative feeling is all around us.

So many of us are guilty of it.

The littlest thing will set us off,

and send us into a angry rage...

Being tale gated on the highway.

Something our spouse said (or didn't say).

Our kids not listening.

THAT coworker.
A rude person in the market.
Your less that perfect family.

Anger is something that I have spent far to much of my life dealing with.

Angry that I didn't have that "perfect family".

Angry that I didn't have parents that PUSHED me to follow my dreams.

Angry that I made less than perfect decisions.

Angry that I didn't let my true colors show a long time ago.

It's easy to let ANGER eat away at us.

Rather than taking a "deep breath",
I dwell.
I hold grudges.

I am letting this be my new challenge to myself.
If we are to "Live and Love like Jesus",
then anger should be obsolete.
Life is too short to be burdened by anger.
It takes away from happiness.

Fight Back With LOVE

Being the child of divorced parents,

LOVE was always a tough concept to grasp.

My idea of LOVE was something found on TV.

It was never modeled at home.

A true recipe for disaster.

It wasn't until a few years into college,

{when I grew out of my awkward stage}

when guys began taking notice in me.

It was then, that I began setting standards for what I wanted in a man.

Well I knew what I DIDN'T want,

let's put it that way.

For some reason though,

I was consistently let down.

I always seemed to LOVE them, more than they LOVED me.

I was ok with that though,

because I CLUNG to what was comfortable.

For many,

it would be easy to loose hope.

Give up on LOVE.

Become jaded.

Throw in the towel.

I fought back though.

I prayed like crazy and asked God to send me his perfect person.

And you know what?

He did just that.

It's crazy to think how far I have come in LOVE.

I never gave up hope.

I never feared God's plan.

I still believed in fairy tales and finding my prince charming.

This is my testament to all you that can relate.

Maybe you are lost in love right now?

Maybe you fought back?

Who can relate?

It doesn't matter how successful we are if we don't take the time to help those in need.

After I started The Shine Project, I realized that if we all came together for a specific cause, we could really make a difference. I started The Shine Project Scholarship Fund to help inner city high school students to go to college. I have the blessing of working with these kids on a weekly basis, and they have so much potential it is unbelievable. They just need some extra love to get there. My goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of the year for them. I started a CHANGE4CHANGE campaign where people can pledge to raise $100 in change by the end of the year. All that money will go to the students. If 100 people pledge, thats already $10,000. This campaign leads up to The SHINE Event that I am throwing on October 20th, in Phoenix, AZ. It is a raffle/silent auction, and the students will be putting on an inspiring program. It's been a lot of work, stress, and faith, but it's one of those dreams I've always had. Come Shopping with me...Target adventures

It's a bi weekly occurrence.

Sometimes tri weekly.

I am talking about my trips to Target of course.

You see, I have a secret love affair with Target.

Days that begin with Target are always the best of days.

It's sick really...

Now,

there is a "routine" to all Target trips...

They ALL start and end the same.

Are you ready for this?

You are likely to find me there in the 9:00 AM hour.

{its the only dang store that opens early enough, and this momma's got to GET OUT}

We stroll in and get that BIG HUGE GIGANTIC cart that is impossible to steer.

I hate that I'm THAT Mom, but it makes my little girl happy.

We immediately make a B-LINE for the Starbucks cafe.

Ice water for Miss L, iced coffee for Momma.

After a few sips of COFFEE, we begin perusing through the dollar section.

I throw in some USELESS things that I can't pass up because they are ONE DOLLAR.

Most likely I will give Landyn some stupid squishy ball to entertain her for a few moments, only to quickly get it chucked at my head....

Next, the clothes...Momma's favorite section.

Typically I do a quick glance because the BIG HUGE GIGANTIC cart won't fit down the aisles without knocking down the entire racks. Therefore I grab and GO.

By the time I am at the stores half way point,

(the baby section)

I am ripping open Gerber Graduates yogurt melts because little L is getting restless.

I told you I bribe with FOOD.

I try to avoid the toy section at all costs.

I can't tell you how many baby dolls I have let Landyn "LOOK AT",

only to end up BUYING because she proceeded to rip open the ENTIRE BOX....

By the time I screech around the corner to the home section,

{my second favorite section}

Landyn is STANDING up in the cart screaming "WALK, WALK, WALK".

It's by this time I am getting the "IAMTHEWORSTMOMINTHEWORLD" LOOK.

Let's just say Landyn WINS.

I manage to grab a few red tag clearance home items.

{where I get 80% of my home decor, yes on CLEARANCE, I'm cheap like that}

Let me just tell you I get a sick THRILL when I find something I need on red tag clearance.

I call it a "GOOD" Target day.

The next 20 minutes is spent aiding Landyn in cart pushing,

replacing things she has taken off shelves,

lot's of apologizes,

chasing down aisles...

until I have had enough,

and back in the cart she goes.

The final stretch,

which houses the REAL reason I went to Target in the first place,

(you know, laundry soap, deodorant, toothpaste)

is typically SKIPPED entirely

due to full on MELT DOWN MODE...

Screaming at the top of her lungs, flailing her arms, throwing things out of the cart...

Phewww...

and my husband wonders why I'm tired at the end of the day.

10 years later

The day started off as many did...

the buzzing of my alarm,

followed by hitting the snooze button a few too many times,

and sprinting to the shower to make it on time to my freshman year of college.

But this day didn't go according to planned.

This day took a different turn.

September 11, 2001 sticks in my memory as if it were yesterday.

I'll never forget the tone in my mom's voice as she broke the news to me.

I remember being glued to the TV for hours.
I remember feeling disbelief. Fear. Heartache.

The world shut down that day and was forever changed.

September 11 was something we as a nation never prepared for in our life time.
The magnitude is still hard to fathom.

As Americans, it is easy to take our freedom for granted.
Easy to forget what we stand for.

This day forever changed me.
Ten years later,
watching the footage of that September morning, brings me to tears.

It reminded me of the true meaning of unity.
Patriotism.
Watching all the service men and women risk their lives to help others,
all in honor of the red, white, and blue, is truly amazing.
As a nation we bound together all for the name of our country.

Help me today in remembering September 11 and all it affected.
Help me in thanking all those who have served, or continue to serve our country.
God Bless our USA.

It was a "how can it be" moment...

The day it hit me that "my baby" was in fact a "big girl"...

Miss L's 1st day of toddler preschool.

No tears were shed,
{after all, I GO WITH HER}
but watching her trot off to her classroom did make me a tad weepy.

It's knowing that she is where she is supposed to be,
ready to learn life lessons that she will forever carry with her,
makes my heart full.

Candy Corn Bark

I am ready to bid summer farewell,
and welcome my favorite season of them all,
FALL.

What better way to kick off the season,

then with a fun sweet treat?

Remember my jelly bean bark?

Yep, it's time for the Fall version...

Candy Corn Bark

1 bag of candy corn

1 bag of white candy melts

parchment paper

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Pour half of your bag of candy corn onto the cookie sheet.

Melt candy melts in the microwave at 30 second intervals and then stir. Continue until melted. Pour over candy corn. Evenly spread.

Pour the remaining candy corn into the melted chocolate.

Refrigerate for one hour. OR stick in the freezer to expedite the process.

Break apart into 2-3 inch pieces and SERVE!

Wrap it up and gift to friends and coworkers.

The past few days has been a whirlwind for me,

and I thought I'd share real quick where I am at.

I have tried to compose a post to express myself to you,

but have been unable to get the words out right.

{Here goes my best shot}

For the most part,

my blog is a happy place.

I like to believe that life is happy.

And then suddenly life throws you a curve ball and changes all that.

A year ago this month,

my dear aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

She has fought a hard fight for one whole year,

but unfortunately

we got word last week that her cancer has spread to her lungs and her time with us is numbered.

My heart is broken into a million little pieces.

Sitting in a dark room with the women that has been that mother figure my whole life,

{the women you have always looked up to and vowed to model yourself after}

tell you that she is dying,

wages a crazy war in your heart.

Tears streaming down our faces.

Hands gripped tight.

I will never forget that moment for the rest of my life.

I like to believe that I am this "big Christian" with lots of faith.

The truth is, I am a baby Christian.

And times like this make my faith even smaller.

Why would God take someone so dear to us?

Someone with a heart of gold that just wants to see her kids get married?

The truth is, I am angry.

I'm sorry for being so vulnerable.

I had to let you in on where I'm at.
I can not hide from you.
I promised I'd be real.

I'll be back to myself soon.

A family tradition: TACOS

Do you have a special family recipe that's been handed down for generations?

In the Roberts family {my madden name},

our recipe is as simple as TACOS.

My dad was born and raised in Sun Valley, CA.

{It's now considered THE HOOD}

None the less,

my Grandma was FAMOUS in town for her tacos,

and they were named "Sun Valley" tacos.

My mom made them for us when we were little,

and I have carried on the recipe to my little family.

Want to know the recipe?

It's embarrassingly simple.

So simple,

that it may in fact be your recipe too.

{I always say that my grandma sprinkled them with LOVE}

Sun Valley Tacos

1 lb ground beef {I substitute ground turkey too}

WAIT FOR IT....

Lawry's Seasoning TACO packet

corn tortillas

grated cheese

shredded lettuce

tomatoes

oil

canned refried beans {I prefer the spicy ones}

brown ground beef. add seasoning packet, and 2/3 c water. simmer.

warm beans on stove

heat oil in a small skillet. Place one corn tortilla in hot oil and let cook. Flip, and then fold in half until your tortilla shell is crisp.

Add meat and the fixings to your shell and ENJOY.

And when you spend 30 minutes in the kitchen,

this is what your living space looks like while cooking with a toddler...

We've been to the zoo a handful of times,

but for some reason our trip today was my favorite.

The older Landyn gets,

the more "enjoyable" things become.

Watching the amazement and wonder on my two year old's face,

turns my heart into MUSH

I've found the ol' saying,
"It get's better with time",

holds true, more often than not...

Sure, bringing this face to the zoo was fun,

but it was a different sort of fun.

The older Landyn gets,

the more I learn to manage and let it all go.

The more I learn to ENJOY our family of three.

Watching my girl grow into her own person,

and stretch her wings,

makes this ride so worth it.

If you were to put this momma into a category,

some might classify me as "uptight".

I've always been a nervous nelly type personality.

I'd rather sit it out than take a RISK.

Since having Miss L,

my "uptight" nature,

has only intensified.

I KNOW that this little quark about me,

drives my hubby crazy.

{he is the complete OPPOSITE...dare devil to the extreme}.

As of late,

I've been trying to remind myself to ease up.

Not sweat the small stuff...

It's OK if Landyn runs through the water fountains with her clothes on.

Eats macaroni and cheese for the zillionth time this week.

Climbs up the big kid later at the park.

Drinks non organic milk from restaurants.
drinks fountain water.

Goes to bed past 8pm.

{Yes, I am THAT obsessive}

I'm starting to realize that THESE moments are fleeting.

I am going to wake up and this will ALL be over.

"I'm gonna Miss this".

I want to cherish it ALL.

I've really been trying to remind myself that Landyn will only be MINE for a small amount of time.

Soon she will be an adult, and my worries will be different worries.

So for now,

I'm going to take a DEEP breath,
and soak it up.

Lots of down time

Relaxation

Let's just say, I was MISLEAD.

Now, don't get me wrong,

I wouldn't trade this job for anything in the world.

I'm just keeping it real and sharing what I've learned,
because let's face it,
momma's are modest and don't always share how challenging this job really is.
Myself included.
So this is for all you Mom's...
Mom's to be.
Future Mom's.
Grandma's.
Aunts.
Caretakers.

Life of a Mom: Imagined vs Reality

Imagined:

Playing dress up in frilly dresses and bows.

Reality:

20 outfit changes a day and a "simple" onesie will likely be your staple.
Bows? They will get pulled right off.

Imagined:

Daily shopping trips to the MALL.

Reality:

Shopping days are far and few between. Time is no longer your own. Your child makes your schedule. Miss L refuses to sit in her fancy stroller that I HAD to have. You find yourself bribing your littles with candy. The back arching temper tantrum is bound to happen 10 mins into any shopping experience.

Imagined:

Play dates will be a daily social gathering for the momma's.

Reality:

Play dates involve broken conversations with a lot of "what was I saying". Playing referee and catching your kids arm mid air as she goes in for attack. At the end of the play date you feel as though you ran a half marathon.

Imagined:

Perfect hair. Perfect outfit. Matching diaper bag and stroller. Baby in tow will be color coordinated as well. I will be THAT Mom that everyone talks about.

Reality:

Stained Shirts, food in my hair, boogers on my face. If we make it out the door without an outfit change on either part, it's a good day.

Imagined:

I will be ORGANIZED and CLEAN.

Reality:

Forget organization. Just when you go to put something somewhere it is removed. My purse is full of rocks and pebbles, my car has pb&j stuck in the crevices, my couch smells like sour milk, and theres a beautiful crayon mural on my dining room table.

Imagined:

Nap time = RELAXATION

Reality:

Nap time involves cleaning house, picking up toys for the 19th time, laundry, preparing dinner,
Lee La La business...you get my drift. With mommy hood comes pure exhaustion. I rely on coffee in these parts.

Imagined:
I will cook a gourmet meal every night.
Reality:
I never knew one stove could make so much smoke. Let's just say I have learned I have no future in culinary education. Pre made meals are my specialty.

Imagined:
Thinking to yourself "That screaming toddler is OUT OF CONTROL". "They must have TERRIBLE parents".
Reality:
You no longer judge other mom's. Kids are unpredictable and tantrums happen to the best of us.

Battle of the HOMES

For the past few months,

the hubs and I have been going back and forth with our living situation.

We bought our first home two years ago,

and are SO very happy here.

We live in a picture perfect community,
in an award winning school system,
10 minutes from the BEACH,

but things are SMALL.

{We own a 2 bedroom townhouse}.

Truth be told,

we have been doing a LOT of thinking about expanding our family.

THIS, however, would require us to relocate.

Something BIGGER.
Something more EXPENSIVE.

You see,
living in So Cal is NOT cheap.
The thought of spending $3,000 a month to RENT,
or $600,000 to buy a SINGLE FAMILY HOME,
makes me sick.

This going back and forth,
has been weighing me down.

do we make the move?
do we suck it up and hang tight for awhile longer?

I want Landyn to remember her childhood home as I do.
White picket fence.
A BACKYARD.
Her hand prints on the back patio.

It's hard not to compare myself to those around me.
It's hard to keep up.

What I do know,
is that I am SO VERY BLESSED,
to be able to stay home and be MOMMY,
every.single.day.
My hubby is able to provide for us and we live comfortably.

At the end of the day,
my heart tells me that everything will happen in HIS TIME.
Until then, I pray for patience...

Queen for a Day & a GIVEAWAY

Growing up,

there was ALWAYS something magical about birthdays...

As a child,

it was about the suspense of the gifts,

a free ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins,

In High School,

you got your locker wrapped,

and got to pick a restaurant of choice for dinner.

For me now,

birthday's are quite different...

They mean ANOTHER YEAR OLDER..... {SIGH}...

I get to relive this "excitement" with Miss L on her special day.

we've done just that.

I've gotten a lot of emails about Miss L's bedroom decor.

So today, I decided to open her room to you all.

I like to think of her decor as Shabby Chic, but the cherry wood furniture off sets that.

{the crib was given to us, and I couldn't turn it down, so I made do}.

I went with distressed white shelves and frames and a whimsical decor feel.

I actually love the dark wood accents that break up all the PINK.

Her walls are a soft pink from Benjamin Moore called Pink Cadillac.

Will throw a wrinkled shirt in the drier as an alternative to ironing...Or use my hair flat iron to iron out a few minor wrinkles... some call this LAZY, I call it AWESOME!

Will insist we find the closest Starbucks on our family camping trip. This momma doesn't do instant.

Saves and reuses EVERYTHING! That includes last years tissue pom pom's used for Miss L's cupcake first birthday party. I'm cheap like that!

Is happiest in a t shirt and flip flops.

Would rather make a 20 mile trip for an excuse to go to Target, then buy the SAME THING at the grocery store 1 mile away.

Can't leave my house in the morning without making my bed.

Has "one glass of wine and she's feeling kinda tipsy".

uses the word "LIKE" entirely too much...can't take the So Cal out of the girl.

gets a ridiculous amount of satisfaction when I buy something on clearance.

favorite smell is the new car scent.

pre baby, wore heels EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Even to the beach.

would win an award for the most number of bathroom breaks in one day....and no I'm not pregnant.

Im off to Raging Waters with the family tomorrow.

It wasn't my idea, I assure you!

My "Research"

Whenever I am perusing thru pinterest or fashion magazines,
I call it "my research".
It sounds very important.
As though I am bettering myself and others at the same time.
It allows me to justify the mounds of dishes or loads of laundry I could be doing instead.

Well with that being said,
my "research" tells me that the pretty braids I am seeing just about everywhere,

you need to INVEST.

"what is my best piece of blog advice"?

INVESTMENT.

Here's 2 ways I did it:
{I am by no means, a blog expert. THIS is what has worked for me.}

1. Invest in a blog design.

No matter how tech savvy you are, I recommend paying a professional blog designer. I used Laura Jane Designs, and it was the best $100 I've ever spent. Not only did she make my site "pretty", she taught this computer illiterate new blogger (ME), MANY useful tips.

2. Invest in a GOOD camera.
I recommend any DSLR camera. I have a Nikon D3000 that doesn't leave my side, but Canon's are great too. Blogging is ALL visual. The better, and CLEARER, the pictures, the more traffic you will see. This camera can pay for itself over time. Seriously!

Oh and of course LOTS and LOTS of TIME goes into blogging. There are many late nights and early mornings spent keeping up, but its SO worth it.

As of lately,

I have been walking with temptation.

Sure, we've all faced it at some point in our lives...

It dates back to the bible.
We are natural born sinners.

Temptation is inevitable.

In today's day and age though,

we are tempted at all angles.

Media. Peers. Family. Life.

I feel like there is no escape.
Everywhere I turn,
I am being tried.

What I believe, tested.

We are naturally susceptible to this sin,

and there have been times as of late,

that I find myself WEAK.

Lacking self control.

I feel tempted to chase money.

Tempted to have that "perfect" body.

Tempted to follow idols.

Tempted to ALWAYS want more.
Tempted to have the best of EVERYTHING.
Tempted to believe the grass is greener on the other side.

Tempted to glorify power.
Tempted to let my insecurity overtake me.

Perhaps it is my season to feel tempted.
"This too shall pass"....

I'll have you know,
I would never "act" on these impulses,
for that is what my faith is for...
But it sure weighs me down.

Sunday,

I spent the day with the most lovely group of girls for our MOPS steering retreat.

We discussed the upcoming years events,

and managed to squeeze in A LOT of laughs,
even some tears.

We gathered at the most gorgeous of homes,

the residence of our mentor mom.

Walking in, I felt as though I had stepped into a Pottery Barn catalog...

It was THAT gorgeous.

Every inch of space,

from the glass cloches atop beautiful pedestals,
to the crisp ironed linens,

to the perfectly manicured gardens in the backyard,

was a sight.

It wasn't just the ascetics that where pleasing though.

THIS particular mentor mom,

has a LOVE for Jesus that radiates onto all she speaks too.

Her energy is contagious!

It's homes like this,

that I strive to model.
Its homes like this that set a precedence for what I want MY home to be like.

Homes where you walk in and feel like your getting a great big hug.

Laughter is welcome. Love is guaranteed.

I am thankful for these women in my life.

This ministry that I am a part of that has me striving for greatness.
